GE Tub Seal
Isolating the Problem
A water leak at the top of the tub doesn't show up until the basket is spinning and throwing water everywhere.

Repairing an Upper Tub Leak
- Unplug the washer and move it out about 6".
- Slide a putty knife between the top and the cabinet, about 3 inches in from each corner. The spring clips securing the top can be released by pushing in and pulling up on the putty knife handle. Don't use a screwdriver or you will chip the porcelan top. Tilt the top back against the wall.
- Look around the bottom edge of the rubber seal on top of the tub for areas where the metal tub has rusted through. If you find holes, grind away the rust using course sandpaper or steel wool. You may have to lift the rubber seal to make sure you clean the area around the hole.
- Thoroughly dry the area around the holes. A hair dryer works good if you are in a hurry.
- Apply silicone sealant to both sides of the holes. Let it cure for at least 12 hours before you wash clothes.
- Check for leaks. If you suspect that the water is going over the top of the seal, you should shim up the tub by putting washers on the bolts between the bottom of the tub and the tub supports to push the tub seal up against the washer top.
