The water will freeze in the tray at temperatures below 32 deg. F.
The flextray has a timed harvest cycle. If the freezer temperature is between 10 deg. F and 32 deg. F. the cubes may not have sufficient time to freeze and ice cube shells and water will be produced which will eventually generate block ice.
The timing gear is the small gear in the picture below. The drive gear is the big one.
The drive pin is installed in the cam. Its function is to drop through the hole in the drive gear and cause the cam to rotate 360 degrees or one complete revolution when enough time has elapsed to freeze the water in the tray. This will harvest the ice.
If the pin is worn it can drop out of the square slot in the front plate into the hole in the drive gear and cause an early harvest of the contents of the tray which will fill the bin with block ice.
