Filling the plastic tray with water is the first function to make ice. A knotch in the icemaker cam allows the fill switch to close and energize the water solenoid valve which allows water to flow into the tray. The water flow is timed to fill the tray to the correct level.
The water valve switch is closed when the switch wiper falls into the rectangular slot in the cam.
