Replacing the Door Switch

Door Switch

The door switch stops the dryer motor the instant the door is opened. If your dryer has a light inside the drum, the light will be turned on when the door is opened. If the door microswitch fails open, the dryer will not start.

Procedure for Gathering Failure Confirmation Data

  1. UNPLUG THE DRYER
  2. Use a No.15 Torx screwdriver to remove the 4 screws up over the door that secure the cabinet top.
  3. Pull the dryer away from the wall far enough so that you can swing the top up far enough that it will stay up.
  4. Locate the door switch in the upper right corner of the cabinet front behind the door.
  5. Get your ohmmeter and set it to the lowest resistance scale.
  6. Use the ohmmeter to measure the continuity between the two terminals on the backside of the switch.
  7. The switch should be closed (continuity or low impedence) when the door is closed and should be open when the door is open.
  8. If the switch is open when the door is closed, it needs to be replaced.

Procedure for Replacing the Door Switch

  1. Use your dryer's model number to get a new switch.
  2. Locate the door switch and the two or three wires leading to it. It's to your right, between the front panel and the drum. Remove the wires.
  3. Remove the old switch and replace it with the new one. Reconnect the wires.
  4. Lower the lid and replace the 4 cabinet top screws.
  5. Verify proper operation.
